Progress continues on upgrade of playgrounds
Member for Watson Tony Burke and Mayor of the City of
Canterbury , Cr Robert Furolo MP, have inspected work on one of the 33 children’s playgrounds to be upgraded in the local area under the Rudd Government’s Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.
“Playgrounds are an important part of our community infrastructure – along with our schools, roads and sporting fields,” Mr Burke said.
“The playground upgrades are funded through the more than $1 billion Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program – the largest one-off investment in local infrastructure in
Australia ’s history.
“Earlier this year, Council received $702,000 through the program and 33 children’s playgrounds will have an upgrade, as well as floodlighting at
Beaman
Park in Earlwood.
“We commenced work in May and so far shade structures over children's playgrounds have been installed at Anzac, Beaumont, Bennett, Croydon, Lees and Rudd parks, Bungalow Road Reserve, Coolabah Street Reserve, Eccles, Forrester, Harcourt, Jubilee and Terry Lamb reserves as well as Earlwood and McLaughlin ovals.
“Soft-fall material has been installed under play equipment at Eccles and Harcourt reserves and new play equipment has been installed in Flora Street and Wanstead Avenue reserves.
“Works are planned for completion in December and will be a fantastic improvement to the recreational facilities in our area.”
The Federal Government is also announcing the Second Round of Grants from the Regional and Local Infrastructure Community Program. Canterbury City Council will receive $280,000 in the second grant for further local infrastructure projects.
