JOINT STATEMENT ON MELBOURNE SYNAGOGUE ATTACK
Last night’s arson attack on the East Melbourne Synagogue was disgusting and cowardly.
The fact it took place while people, including children, were having a Shabbat dinner inside,
makes it all the more abhorrent.
Antisemitism is evil and has no place in our society.
The Government stands with the Jewish community and is committed to supporting
improved security measures at places of worship.
The investigation is being led by Victoria Police, with our security and intelligence agencies
providing whatever support is needed.
The investigation is ongoing, however the Government is stepping up the fight against hate
crimes. Earlier this year, we brought in tough new measures to punish anyone convicted of
carrying out violent crimes motivated by bigotry.
Quote attributable to Minister for Home Affairs, Tony Burke:
“This morning, I was briefed by the acting head of ASIO and the Commissioner of the
Australian Federal Police, as well as the Victorian Minister for police Anthony Carbines.
I’ve also spoken to the Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism, Jillian Segal, and the
Secretary of the Department of Home Affairs, Stephanie Foster.”
“I condemn last night’s disgusting attack in the strongest possible terms. Australians have a
right to feel safe and protected from violence and bigotry.”
Quote attributable to Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Dr Anne Aly:
“The Albanese Government condemns these kinds of violent acts of hatred.”
“All Australians have a right to safety. Acts of antisemitism violate that right and should face
the full force of the law.”
“I have spoken with the Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism Jillian Segal about the need
for a broader approach to educate people about the insidious nature of antisemitism and the
impact it has on Jewish Australians.”
“The Government will continue to work with the special envoy on measures to prevent these
vile and cowardly attacks.”
