LABOR OPPOSES MIRVAC DEVELOPMENT ON CANTERBURY RACECOURSE SITE

Mayor of the City of Canterbury Bankstown Khal Asfour and local MP Tony Burke today expressed their outrage at claims by Mirvac that the largest recreational land in our local area is planned as a zone for new apartment release.

Mirvac have today put up an ad online stating “A proposed new apartment release by Mirvac is coming soon to Canterbury. A new partnership between Mirvac and The Australian Turf Club proposes to adjoin Canterbury Park Racecourse.”

The land owned by the Australian Turf Club is zoned recreational. This recreational zoning exists in a very specific context. Our local area is massively underrepresented in recreational space and the demand for recreational space has only increased in the last few years as population density has increased.

Any attempt to reduce the amount of recreational space in our local area will be fiercely resisted by local Labor representatives.

Mirvac and the Australian Turf Club are taking our local area for granted. I asked the Australian Turf Club for a briefing last year on their plans for the site and they cancelled on the day. I can now see why. This is a complete betrayal of our local area and we won’t stand for it.” Tony Burke

The entire racecourse isn’t even zoned to allow for residential housing, so It’s outrageous a developer can openly start to market a housing development which has not even been lodged with Council, let alone approved. This smells like the NSW Government has had behind the scenes discussions with the developer and ATC, and looking to bypass Council and ignore local residents.” Khal Asfour
